Sleep is the best recovery tool

Muscles grow not in the gym but in your sleep. Why sleep is the most important recovery tool.

During deep sleep the body releases growth hormone, repairs tissue and consolidates movement skills. Too little sleep undoes even perfect training and nutrition.

How much you need

  • 7–9 hours for most adults; athletes, closer to the upper end.
  • Regularity matters more than one long night — go to bed and get up at the same time.

How to sleep better

  • No bright screens in the hour before sleep.
  • A cool, dark, quiet room.
  • Caffeine no later than 8 hours before sleep.
  • Alcohol disrupts the deep phases of sleep.

In short

If you have to choose between an extra workout and an hour of sleep, sleep usually wins.
