Compound (multi-joint) exercises work several joints and muscle groups at once. Isolation exercises focus on one muscle. A good programme combines both.
Compound exercises
- Squat, deadlift, bench press, pull-up, overhead press.
- The most strength and muscle per unit of time.
- They train coordination and burn more calories.
Isolation exercises
- Biceps curls, raises, calf raises.
- They add work for lagging muscles and refine the details.
- They put less load on the joints and the nervous system.
How to combine them
Start with 1–2 compound exercises while you are fresh and finish with 2–3 isolation ones. Beginners need mostly compound work; for experienced lifters, isolation smooths out weak points.
