Progressive overload: the basis of growth

The main principle behind gaining strength and muscle is increasing the load gradually. How to do it safely.

Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress on your muscles over time. Without it the body has no reason to get stronger: it adapts exactly to the load it regularly receives.

How to progress

  • Weight: add 2.5–5 kg once you complete all the planned reps with confidence.
  • Reps: the same weight, but 1–2 more reps each week.
  • Sets: from 3 to 4 when the volume stops giving results.
  • Tempo: slow down the lowering phase — more time under load.

Do not rush

Adding weight every session quickly hits a ceiling and leads to injury. Aim for weekly gains. If your technique breaks down, the weight is too heavy.

In short

Pick one variable, progress it for 2–4 weeks, then switch. Record every workout — without numbers, progress becomes guesswork.
